A new report from the United Health Foundation and reported by CBS News ranked the healthiest and unhealthiest states in the USA. The results may (or may not) surprise you!
The report looked at 35 different health factors including air quality, rates of obesity, smoking, drug use, and more to determine the healthiest state… and the ones that didn’t do so well.
Here’s how your state ranked:
Least Healthiest States
- West Virginia
- South Carolina
- New Hampshire
- New York
Massachusetts topped the chart as the healthiest state in the United States!
One of the reasons why Massachusetts tops the list is the ratio of care providers to citizens. For example, Massachusetts has the highest concentration of mental health providers with 547 for ever 100,000 residents. The state also boasts a large number of primary care physicians as well as dentists.
Across the Country
Other top performers include Utah which ranked 4th overall, an improvement from 8th overall last year. This is due largely to improvements to child health as well as pollution initiatives. Florida “improved” to 32nd overall, better than last year’s 36th. The state has made recent gains in the areas of child poverty as well as mental health.
