When looking to rent a home, there are a lot of factors to consider. Location, price, amenities, and more. Given that, any attempt to find the best city to rent a home in may be a matter of preference more than science. However, this one city comes pretty close to meeting all needs.
A survey, conducted by Apartment List, asked 45,000 renters nationwide to rank their cities on several factors, including:
- Job and career opportunities
- Commute time
- And more.
All of those above factors are important when deciding where to live. What’s more, the cumulative total of those factors helps reflect the desirability of that location. After all, no one wants to live in a place with great recreation but no career opportunities. Affordability is a key factor, but how about those taxes?
The survey looked solely at individuals who rent (not own). Based on that, the best city to rent a home in the United States is….
Yes, you read that correctly. Scottsdale, Arizona was selected as the city where renters feel best about living there. A relatively affordable city with access to plenty of recreation and amenities; Scottsdale beat out all of the big cities in the US.
Cities like New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and more did not fare as well. While bigger cities tend to have a lot more going for them, they also pay the price when it comes to cost of living. Taxes, congestion, long commute times, and high housing costs kept most major cities well out of the top 5.
Scottsdale was joined by Plano, Texas who took the #2 spot. Rounding out the top 5: Hunting Beach, California, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Spring, Texas.
While none of these cities are considered “big” cities, they aren’t exactly rural either. Hunting Beach, California is a surfer’s paradise in Southern California. Cambridge is home to the prestigious Harvard University.
These days, plenty of people are congregating in America’s largest cities. However, at the same time there are a lot of grumbling residents looking elsewhere. Lack of affordable housing and high taxes are causing people to leave big cities while looking for opportunity elsewhere.
