When it comes to city living, America has a lot to offer. New York, Los Angeles, Miami, etc. These diverse cities are teeming with life, culture, and opportunity. However, when it comes to overall appeal, one study has Chicago as the best city in the country.
According to Time Out’s Annual City Life Index, Chicago is not only the best city in the country, but the entire world! In a survey of over 15,000 people in over 32 different cities, Chicago ranked highest for the second year in a row.
The results were based on a broad analysis of several factors, including: affordability, happiness, dining, entertainment, and more. You can view the entire list here.
Chicago scored high marks for its food and drink options. The varied cuisine and nightlife in Chicago, from upscale eateries to food truck rallies make Chicago an attractive foodie destination. In fact, Chicago scored 2nd overall in this category, just behind Tel Aviv.
Culture and entertainment also helped boost the city’s standing. From major sport teams and theaters, to live music, museums, and more. Chicago has a little bit of everything to offer in terms of fun and leisure.
The overall affordability of Chicago helped cement its status as the best city in the country (and the world!). The survey is quick to point out that living in any major city can get expensive. However, relative to other major cities, Chicagoans are relatively happy with their cost of living. 81% surveyed indicated they were happy with the economics of the city.
Overall happiness and friendliness also scored high on the survey. Midwestern residents are generally regarded as more easy going, laid back, and friendlier than their coastal big city cousins.
If Chicago sounds like a mid-west paradise, perhaps life in the second city is for you. Before setting out on a life-changing move, however, it helps to know your cost of living.
